8 Important Ransomware Prevention Tips

Dealing with the results after a ransomware attack is not enjoyable, that is why it is so important to take the right measures and focus on preventing the attack altogether!

In light of the recent ransomware virus that attacked more than 100 000 computers across 99 countries (learn more here), The Computer Guyz have put together a list of the most important ransomware prevention tips you NEED to know…

     1.       Most importantly – Back up! You will always regret that back up you left for tomorrow, rather back up as regularly as possible and avoid losing your precious data. Call 087 001 0511/2 or email sales@tcgcape.co.za to learn more about The Computer Guyz’ backup services.

     2.       Never open email attachments that seem suspicious. A lot of ransomware finds its way onto your system through unsolicited attachments. Rather avoid clicking on attachments from senders you don’t know or that you were not expecting.

     3.       Think twice before you click on something! Dangerous, malicious links can be sent to you in many ways including emails, Facebook, Twitter and other social media networks and sites as well as instant messengers like Skype. Never click on something unless you trust the page or sender 100%

     4.       Patch and keep your software up-to-date. Ransomware often relies on bugs in your software and apps to attack your PC. When you regularly do security patches you can prevent attackers from infecting you.

     7.       Use a strong password that cannot be decoded by cybercriminals. You may think you are protected with your password, however it is best to set unique passwords for every single different account that you have.

     8.       Train your employees! A business is as strong as its weakest link, so make sure to train and retrain your employees on a regular basis. Explain to them about malicious emails, documents and attachments and make sure all their PCs are effectively protected.

Hopefully these prevention tips help to protect your business as well as yourself from the malicious attack of ransomware.
