Have you allowed your child to create an Instagram account for themselves (remember they must be 13 years or older)? If so, chances are that you should already trust them.

BUT, to ensure your kid is staying safe you don’t want to have to go through all their posts, so it’s best to take extra precautions… Here are 4 really easy Instagram settings parents should teach their kids to use to protect their privacy as well as your phone bill!

  ü  PRIVACY MODE

Just their followers and ONLY their followers will be able to see your kid’s Instagram posts and stories. Make sure to teach them the importance of only following and accepting requests from people they know and trust – there are a lot of sickos out there!

Go to profile > press the settings gear icon in the top right > turn on “Private Account” setting

  ü  SHARE WITH SPECIFIC FOLLOWERS

This isn’t a setting, but it’s more about teaching your child that they shouldn’t post every single story and post to every follower they have. Does grandpa really need to see all those different outfit pics your daughter wants to share with her friends? Rather show her how to create a group or direct message that specific person.

Tap the paper plane icon in the upper right corner > tap the plus sign in the upper right corner > select followers to add to group

  ü  TURN OFF LOCATION SERVICES

It is pretty creepy to know that Instagram and the people following your kid know where they are from using geo tag locations. To stay safe, get them to disable the tracking in their settings.

Go to settings > privacy > location services > scroll to Instagram and press “Never”

  ü  USE LESS DATA

To help keep your child’s data and Wi-Fi use in check, always enable “Use Less Data” so they cannot access videos and other posts that suck up data. You may have to change this setting when their sleeping!

Go to profile > tap the settings gear icon in the top right > cellular data use > press “use less data”

Use these super easy tips to make sure your child stays safe on Instagram as well as doesn’t make you pay an arm and a leg for data!
