Gadgets from “Back to the Future” that are real in 2015

It’s the year 2015, the year when “Back to the Future II” promised that everything would be a whole lot cooler!

Okay, so majority of the predictions in the movie were horribly off the mark, but there are some gadgets that the film predicted correctly. Here are just a few tech tools from the “Back to the Future” universe that have actually come to life.

Phone Glasses
In the movie, everyone wore these multi-purpose smart glasses to watch TV or answer phone calls. Today we have something similar, like Google Glass and the Oculus Rift, though neither is very mainstream yet. Besides, wearing Google Glass today kind of makes you look like a total loser.

Doors with fingerprint recognition
Aside from smartphones with touch ID, people today can totally buy door locks that operate by using your fingerprint. There is even a hotel in Barcelona that has a fingerprint recognition system on its doors as well as a hotel in Singapore. The future is now!

Self-lacing Nikes
In “Back to the Future II” Marty McFly slips on a cool pair of self-lacing Nikes, this inspired Nike to actually release 1500 pairs of the limited edition Nike Air Mags. However, these replicas of the ‘80s high-tops were only sold through an eBay auction.

TV Video Calls
In 1989, video chatting right through your TV seemed completely impossible. Today, we have the power of video calling in our own pockets. There are also a lot of ways to video chat on a TV in today’s world, from using a smart TV with Skype to using a Xbox One.

Tablets
Characters in the movie casually carry around tablets, and we’re obsessed with the things now! Tablets have become the perfect in-between for people too lazy to carry around laptops and too tired to stare at small phone screens.

3D Movies
In one scene, Marty Mcfly walks past a movie theatre called a Holomax playing Jaws 19, and a hologram of a shark leaps out at him. We may not have hologram theatres, but 3D movies have become a regular thing, and they are only becoming more impressive.

Hands-free gaming
Today we have the Xbox Kinect and the Nintendo Wii, which can operate via gestures and spoken commands. Unfortunately the Kinect is kind of a flop, so there’s still no issue about playing traditional games.

In “Back to the Future II” the director imagined a futuristic world where people would have hover boards, food hydrators and automatic dog walkers, but quite a few of them actually did come to life.
