You can now send a selfie from Mount Fuji

These days, WiFi is available almost anywhere, from your place of work and public transport to basically any restaurant and public area. A lot of people even have WiFi in their homes.

No, thanks to the Japanese, WiFi has also become available at the summit of the country’s highest mountain – Mount Fuji!

As of Friday last week, any climber of the 3,776.24 metre mountain is able to tweet, Instagram and Facebook message as much as their heart desires.

So, you can send selfies on top of a mountain or update your status on Facebook. That’s really cool – if you’re living in a bubble!

Not so long ago the whole point of climbing a massive mountain or going for a hike along the river was to escape the realities of your normal life. It was a way to get away from all the noise and the buildings and embrace nature completely.

Now it’s not a real experience unless you document every moment of your time with a selfie or a lame update that you are #lovinglife.

There is no phone signal when you are halfway up the side of the mountain. And apparently this was a problem, because many climbers from the United States and Europe wanted to use the internet to share experiences while on the mountain. This explains the WiFi.

But why do people need WiFi so desperately? Imagine the joy you must feel when you reach the Mount Fuji summit, looking out onto the horizon knowing you are at the highest point. Then your phone connects to the WiFi and you receive an email from your boss asking if you managed to send that document before you left, and what’s the password for that PDF again?

That is the worst thing that could possibly happen, and the best thing is still horrible! Yes, it’s great to take beautiful pictures on top of a mountain, but you can wait a few days to post them on Instagram.

Now that we have WiFi at one of our highest mountain peaks, it is only a matter of time before there is simply no escape from the internet! Post a Snapchat when you’re inside the Giza Pyramid in Egypt or tweet #yolo from the middle of the Amazon rainforest.

WiFi has surely peaked this time, and it’s all downhill from here.
