Google Street View is now in Space!
Have you ever wanted to explore outer
space, but you don’t really have the time to become an astronaut?
Well, you can now view the International Space Station with Google Street View!
Using Street View is a bit different in
space than it is on earth. Looking around a certain area by clicking is the
same as Street View, however there are special little side notes explaining
what you’re looking at in the ISS.
What is even more impressive about seeing
these images from the ISS is the difficulty Google and NASA must’ve gone
through just to get them. I mean collecting photographs in space can probably
lead to a few difficult challenges.
The rig that is usually used to take images
for Google Street View couldn’t be used practically in the space station,
especially because of the zero gravity, so the DSLR cameras on the ISS were
used. The images were then put together to make up the 360 degree space station
environment that you can explore now.
Thomas Pesquet, a European Space Agency astronaut who worked alongside Google to get the Street View images said: "The
ISS has technical equipment on all surfaces, with lots of cables and a
complicated layout with modules shooting off in all directions—left, right, up,
down."
The ISS is a busy place and getting the
Google Street View image posed many difficulties, but in the end all their hard
work paid off and now we can all explore space from the comfort of our own
homes!
