5 things to know about Facebook’s privacy policy update

Yet again Facebook is trying  to make its privacy policy simpler, many new and old users have been complaining that it is too complex and long for the average users. Luckily for those who don’t enjoy reading, the new Facebook policy is 70% shorter than the old one! Here are five things to remember about Facebook’s data policies…

Location
Only recently has Facebook allowed businesses to advertise based on their location, before this ads were targeted according to the “current city” listed on the profile. If you think about it the old policy and the new one both note that the company can access your location information based on your GPS info! In the new policy it does point out that Bluetooth and WiFi signals can also reveal your device’s location.

Beyond Facebook
It may sound scary, but Facebook doesn't just track everything you do on its site, it also collects information about your activities when your off Facebook. Do you know when you use Facebook to log into other websites and Apps? Well the company will get information about that and don’t forget that Facebook owns other businesses like WhatsApp and Instagram, so they’ll use that to get information about your activities too.

Ad Targeting
Unless you opt out of targeting or decline it, the companies whose websites you visit off of Facebook can also show you ads on Facebook, for example a website can use browser cookies to record who visited it. It can then ask Facebook to show ads to these visitors on and off Facebook!

All eyes on you
Facebook collects information and content about you when you use their services, like when you sign up for an account, create and share or message and communicate with other people. Not only that but Facebook says that it also collects information about HOW you use Facebook, such as the types of content you look at and engage with.

Shopping
There is a new tool that Facebook is testing that allows people to buy directly through the site. If you do decide to buy something Facebook will collect information about the transaction like your credit card number, billing address and shipping address.

Majority of these changes are just to make the policy look better and easier to digest for those reading it, it’s still a good idea to go through it and find out all the things that Facebook knows about you!
