Nydeum Sense – A mouse converged with a keyboard
A keyboard converged with a mouse sounds
like it would be actually quite cool, and that’s the premise of the Nydeum Sense. It’s a mouse that’s built to do double input duty on your PC so you can
ditch your keyboard, but there’s actually a specific scenario where this thing
would be very useful.
At first, it sounds like an incredibly odd
way to mash the two up. A keyboard with a built-in trackpad or trackball?
That’s logical enough, and it’s been done by dozens of companies. But a mouse
that is a keyboard? It seems unnatural.
The Sense’s creators firmly believe that
“the perfected ergonomic input device of the future would have to allow for
one-handed, wireless control.” And not only do they want you to be able to
ditch your keyboard, but they want you to be able to move your cursor without
having to clear a flat surface to mouse on.
As for typing, they claim that you can
swipe around three characters per second on the integrated touch surface once
you’ve become accustomed to the Sense. That’s not anywhere near the speed a
practiced typist can achieve on a standard keyboard, obviously, but it’s
totally fine if you see yourself relaxing and using it in the living room.
The Nydeum Sense looks like it would be an
awesome replacement for the average mouse. It would take up a whole lot less
space, look good sitting on your coffee table, and learning to scrawl letters
with it doesn’t look all that difficult.
The Nydeum Sense isn’t something you can
buy, at least not yet. They’ve got to hit their $100,000 goal on Kickstarter first. If you want to help them build the future of input
devices — and get your hands on one as a thank-you –all you have to do is
pledge $80 and wait patiently for the Sense to ship.
