Germany now has free WiFi in churches
Can you remember a time before WiFi? It’s
getting difficult to. Ours homes have had access to it forever and increasingly
when you go shopping or for a coffee there’s free WiFi available to use and
keep you away from the dreaded monthly data cap. The blanket of coverage
continues to expand, and the latest locations to get it, at least in Germany,
are churches.
Yes, even when carrying out the practice of
religion an Internet connection can be useful. Maybe you forgot your Bible,
need a new hymn to sign, or just want some reference material from Wikipedia
for an interesting religious debate? Germany is making that easy. Imagine,
churches full of people looking down, not praying, but using a smartphone or
tablet.
The best thing about evangelical Protestant
churches in Germany getting WiFi isn’t the fact you’ll probably still be able
to take advantage even if you aren’t religious or even in the church. It’s the
name they chose for these hotspots. They’re Godspots!
Soon we’ll hear phrases including:
“are you connected to the Godspot?”
“is the Godspot down?”
“Godspot is slow”
“can you reboot the Godspot?”
The Godspot project is the work of the
Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Oberlausitz (EKBO), and is already available
in over 220 churches. It’s there to be used by everyone, religious or not, with
the hope it may attract younger people at least closer to churches, but
hopefully inside them, too.
The catchy Godspot name coupled with
completely free access to the Internet is sure to be popular and will probably
spread to all churches across Germany.
Hopefully EKBO is backing up divine
intervention against a malware attack with some network security.
