Don’t stare at your Smartphone for too long – you may go blind!
After playing China’s most addictive mobile
phone game for a whole day, a Chinese woman has gone partially blind!
The young woman was an avid fan of the
popular game – Honor of Kings, however playing the game for hours on end
resulted in her losing her vision in her right eye.
After visiting multiple hospitals, doctors
diagnosed her with RAO (Retinal Artery Occlusion)!
RAO is the blockage in one of the small
arteries that carry blood to the retina in your eye. The retina is a layer of
tissue in the back of the eye that is able to sense light. So, what causes RAO?
The retinal arteries may become blocked when a blood clot or fat deposit gets
stuck in the arteries; these blockages are more likely if there is hardening of
the arteries in the eye. Once the artery is blocked, your retina cannot receive
blood and oxygen causing loss of vision.
RAO usually occurs in elderly people,
however this Chinese woman had a severe addiction. She admitted to playing the
game for up to eight hours continuously and never took a break to eat, drink or
use the toilet.
According to her, she spent an entire day
playing the game, then after dinner she lost sight in her right eye and was
brought to the hospital. BUT a medical director in London has told news outlets
that there is only a slim chance that she developed RAO from her addiction to
the game.
"You don't get RAO from video-related
severe eye strain as is suggested here — it's most commonly evidence of some
form of cardiovascular disease," he said.
The addictive game, Honor of Kings has
over 200 million users across China and even the company behind the game admit that
they’ve had to put a restriction on the game so kids under the age of 12 can
only play for a max of one hour per day.
