How to prevent your Children from becoming addicted to Tech
Introducing a tech device to a child isn’t as
simple as it may seem. Parents need to be prepared to set boundaries and rules
when it comes to using the tech.
Even games and apps that are supposed to be
educational are designed to keep children addicted, keep a look out for the following
tech addiction signs…
§ Obsessive use of the device, leading to social withdrawal
§ Anger, temper tantrums and crying when the device is taken away
§ Ignoring daily activities and routines in order to continue playing
with the device
§ Excessive thinking about high scores or certain characters in the
games or apps
So how do we prevent tech addiction in
children? As a parent you need to be willing to be quite unpopular with your
children until they understand the boundaries and why they are there. Some
preventative measures include:
1.
Limit the use of tech devices,
including the TV, computer, smartphone, tablet, etc.
2.
Schedule a certain time for
them to use the device and other outdoor, physical activities for the rest of
the day
3.
Do not put any devices and
electronic gadgets in your child’s bedroom especially a game system or a TV
4.
Tech-free times should always
be during meals, homework and bedtime
5.
Teach your child about using
the device in moderation and praise them when they listen to the rules you’ve
set
The busy lives we lead can lead technology
to take up a lot of time in a child’s life because our lives are just too
hectic. Make sure that as a parent you make yourself available to talk, listen,
play and engage with your child.
