The Sensel Morph is the Ultimate Trackpad
We are living in a
world filled with technology, so change can happen in the blink of an eye. However,
one thing has always been the same – the good old keyboard and mouse. A new gadget
called the Sensel Morph is looking to change that.
Just imagine a
trackpad that is so much more than just a trackpad. Imagine if it was so
pressure-sensitive that you could use a real paintbrush and transform real
brushstrokes into digital art. This may sound a bit far-fetched, but this is
exactly what the Sensel Morph is promising to be.
This touch-input
device is meant to change the way we interact with the digital world. it looks
like a regular trackpad but inside it is packed with 20 000 sensor elements
that can detect even the slightest touch and measure the force of that touch.
The trackpad measures
about 9 x 5 inches and is compatible with both Windows and Mac PCs and iPads.
The Sensel Morph has been compared to Apple’s Force Touch technology, but it
definitely stands out from the crowd. It can detect anything from a feather
light tap to a hard push and everything in between.
If the paintbrush
scenario didn’t wow you enough, check this out: it can sense pressure even
through layers! Want to draw something on a piece of paper, but want it digitized
too? Well, just place your paper over the Sensel Morph and doodle to your
hearts content. But that’s not all; there are an array of 3D printed silicone
overlays – a keyboard, a piano, a drum kit, music production board and even a
game controller. These overlays can be placed over the Sensel Morph and used in
different applications; each one has a magnet so it can snap easily into place!
The company doesn’t want
to limit the way that users can interact with the Sensel Morph, so they are
allowing users to create their own custom interfaces through a drag-and-drop
process. As more interfaces are created for the device, the more users will be
able to share them with others.
The Sensel Morph is
used to create interfaces that have never been possible before, human
interaction with the digital world can be so much more than just tapping on
glass.
With all that’s going
on with it, you’d think that it would be quite expensive. But the Sensel Morph
is actually fairly prices. It has already met its fundraising goal on
Kickstarter, so the company says it expects to begin shipping the Morph by June
2016.
