IKEA’s new wireless charging furniture

The furniture manufacturer, IKEA, has just recently announced the launch of their new furniture. The amazing thing about this furniture is that it’s in the form of the Home Smart collection that is equipped with wireless charging technology!

This new wireless charging furniture has been fitted with charging points that support QI wireless charging. It offers users more than 80 compatible handsets from manufacturers such as Samsung, Motorola, Panasonic and Sony. The technology isn't currently compatible with iPhones, but adapters are available.

The wireless furniture will only be on sale next month in the US and UK, and if you want to get your hands on some, you can choose from floor, table and work lamps. You also have the option of more traditional furniture like bedside tables and solo charging pads that are capable of being positioned anywhere within your home.

The corporate manager at IKEA, Jeanette Skjelmose said “Through research and home visits, we know that people hate cable mess, they worry about not finding the charger and running out of power. Our new innovative solutions, which integrate wireless charging into home furnishings, will make life at home simpler.”

Environmental groups also worry about the ecological impact of the new doodads! The resource use campaigner at Friends of Earth, told the BBC "A key principle that manufacturers of furniture with built-in wireless charging technology should consider is that the furniture is designed to be easy to disassemble for upgrade, reuse, repair or recycling,"

"Disposable electric toothbrushes are one example of a terrible product design in those respects - it's virtually impossible to separate out the tech from the batteries and plastic casing which means valuable and often toxic materials are dumped in landfill or burnt in incinerators."

By adding wireless charging to home and office furniture, they have minimised the amount of separate chargers needed, let’s hope IKEA has thought of the upgrade path of new changing technology when it becomes available.
