Pebble Time – The latest and greatest wearable

The Pebble TimeKickstarter campaign launched on Wednesday and it is already a monster hit on the crowdfunding website. There are plenty of reasons the Pebble Time has been so successful, so read on to see five of the ways that Pebble has completely nailed it with the Pebble Time watch…

Colour e-paper screen
It’s great to see that the Pebble Time has kept up with the latest Android smartwatches and updated the display. The Pebble Time has a colour e-paper panel, which offers a more contemporary design and makes better use of the apps on offer, yet it’s also more power efficient that traditional LCD or OLED screens found on rival smartphones.

Battery life
Most manufacturers seem to forget that smartwatches are first and most importantly, watches. You don’t want to have to charge your watch twice a day just to check the time. This is where the Pebble Time has struck gold, its e-paper screen doesn't require much juice and it’s able to run for a week between charges. This means you won’t have to remember all your chargers, several cables and to charge both your smartphone and the Pebble everywhere you go, making it that bit more usable.

Smartphone compatibility
The Pebble Time supports a range of both Android and iOS phones. That means a lot, as most of us don’t want to consider swapping smartphones every time we look at a new smartwatch. The fact that rival devices like the Apple Watch will only work with one ecosystem means you’ll have to pay an arm and a leg it you want you make the switch.

Support for older Pebble apps
Plenty of older Pebble apps will work with the Pebble Time as well. With plenty of watch faces already available for Pebble watches and over 6,500 apps – including Android Wear. This means that the Pebble Time will be able to hit the ground running, offering far more variety than most other smartwatches. Throw in new apps that take advantage of the colour screen, and the Pebble has the potential to be the best wearable we've seen yet.

Voice control
The Pebble Time has avoided the temptation to fit a touchscreen in, which greatly benefits battery life, but has a negative impact when it comes to controlling the watch. To counter this, there’s now a microphone to respond to notifications, and it means you’ll be able to send a proper reply when you get a message. It’s not all good news though, iOS users will only have voice control for Gmail notifications at the moment, but Pebble points out that it’s working on enabling voice replies for other apps too. We can’t wait!

The Pebble Time has become very successful, and it’s definitely not a fluke! What do you like most about the Pebble Time, and would you consider upgrading from your current smartwatch?
