In the last few years hackers and new ransomware has been popping up more frequently than ever. Because of this, it is important that we have some general idea of what they’re after, who they target and how they go about their business.

HACKTIVIST

Motives: Getting up to mischief and creating mayhem to make a point. Most of the time they are looking to play havoc with the government, be vigilantes, cyber protest and just have fun.

Boss: They have no boss except themselves!

Tools: Freely available tools to attack web apps.

Methods: Launching DDos attacks or web app attacks to attempt to hijack websites and steal data.

Favourite Beverage: Energy drinks.

CYBER CRIMINAL

Motives: Attempting identity theft, stealing credit card information, extortion, pirating.

Boss: A criminal organization that recruits tech savvy people.

Tools: Use kits sold on the darknet as well as buy and sell botnets and botnet modules.

Methods: They stick to spamming, click-jacking, fakeware and installing ransomware.

Favourite Beverage: Vodka

CYBER SPIES

Motives: Capturing information from my enemies, cyber espionage, stealing secrets, propaganda.

Boss: Their government.

Tools: Highly advanced malware designed for a specific goal.

Methods: Determined threats, zero day exploits, strong encryption, evasion techniques and customized malware.

Favourite Beverage: A martini.
