4 Important Rules a Graphic Designer should live by

When you first start off with graphic design, you’re going to make plenty of mistakes, however there are a few important design rules that most designers agree should be avoided at all costs...

DON’T use too many fonts in one design

The fonts you are using in your design will either make or break the overall result, so NEVER use more than three fonts in the same design. No one wants to read a poster about a concert coming up if you’ve used 10 different fonts, it’s annoying and confusing – don’t do it!

DON’T cram your design full of too much stuff

Just because there is a blank bit of space doesn’t mean you have to fill it up with something. The best designs are those that use white space to their advantage and make the most of it by keeping the design clean and fresh.

DON’T jump right onto Photoshop/Illustrator, etc.

Unless you have less than 30 minutes to finish a design, then don’t just jump right in and start putting things together. You may think you are a horrible sketcher (even if you are) drawing your ideas is an important start to the design process. This process takes time, but it is an important one.

DON’T do the same thing for every design

If you keep using the same concept over and over again – the same fonts, layouts, etc. – then there is no creativity whatsoever. Try something different and fun every time you have a new client – never be afraid to let the creativity flow.

  n  ALWAYS drink coffee before you start working

  n  NEVER be lazy and steal someone else’s work

  n  And make sure to tell your friends and family that your job includes much more than just drawing and playing around on a PC
