Watch the brand new HoloLens demo and you’ll be transported back to the ‘80s
On Wednesday,
Microsoft launched the official HoloLens VR device to developers at its Build
2016 conference.

But unlike the past
demos of the HoloLens which resulted in applause from the audience, this demo
was less amazing and more of a trip back to horrible ‘80s special effects.
Microsoft’s Alex Kipman introduced the dean of Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Pamela Davis, to show off the newest medical education app for the HoloLens.
Once the demo walked
successfully through the holographic human anatomy presentation, the team moved
on to a demo of remote teaching.
That was when the head
of “Mark” appeared. Mark is used for the purpose of the demo to show us how
HoloLens users might be taught by a remote professor.
But the disappointing
part was that instead of seeing Mark as a cool holographic person, we simply
see a a floating model head and hand. The creepy head and hand then bounce
around the model of the brain being displayed, it just all looked scarily
unnatural.
This demo just seemed particularly
disappointing when you look back at the past HoloLens demos such as the one
that displayed a robotic spider and another last week that revealed Star Wars-style holograms.
But beyond what might
be the worst HoloLens demo ever seen, the message is still clear – HoloLens could
be used as a remote tool for teaching.
Before that happens,
Microsoft might want to teleport Mark from the ‘80s and give him a holographic
makeover!
