New Malware wants you to Snap a Selfie
Smile and say cheese, because there’s a new piece of malware
out there that wants you to snap a selfie before it starts taking all your
money!
And not just any selfie, they’re hoping that victims will be
dumb enough to hold up a piece of government-issued ID, too. You know, just for
verification purposes! That’s after you’ve already taken pictures of both the
front AND back of your ID.
The screens this new strain of malware throws at its victim’s
look convincing enough, but when taken in context they’re horribly transparent.
Apparently the malware pretends to be a video codec, Flash plug-in or Porn Tube
app.
Those aren’t exactly the kinds of apps that would even have
a remotely legit reason for verifying your identity. The red flags are huge and
basically waving around so viciously that no one should miss them. But, its
2016 and people are still using the password 123456789, so you can guarantee that
people are definitely going to walk right into this trap.
Anyone who does go this far has blindly handed over their
credit card details and everything else a scammer needs to steal an identity.
Don’t get yourself into a tizz though; the threat really isn’t that severe.
You will only ever come across the Trojan in dodgy
third-party app stores. Even if you do happen to install an app that is
infected, surely you’re intelligent enough to put on the brakes when you see an
unexpected payment window popping up.
