Your future smart home

It’s the start of 2015 and that means that some more amazing future tech is on its way! Just think, in just a few years you’ll wake up in the morning to the sound of your alarm and the hidden sensors in your room will know you’re getting up. The lights will automatically turn on and the thermostat will know to warm the rooms you’re about to use – the bathroom, kitchen and a few minutes later your car!

Your coffee will automatically start to brew, you’ll get notifications about the weather and your kitchen will notify you about which groceries you’ll need to pick up on your way home from work. And then picture leaving your house and simply pressing a button on an app that will self-drive your car out of the garage!

In many ways all the technology for us to have a smart home like this is already there, we just need to be aware of the possibilities. Alex Hawkinson, the CEO and founder of SmartThings recently said "In the past year alone, more people are getting interested in having a smart home as the prices go down and word-of-mouth spreads."

SmartThings has joined up with Samsung and they’re on a mission to create the world’s most open platform, allowing devices from other manufacturers to work together. For example the Samsung refrigerator talking to your LG TV – a message will be sent to you as your watch TV that you left the door open! Alex Hawkinson also went on to say: “Before we see tens of millions of smart homes, we'll all need to work together. We're getting there."

Just imagine your security measures in your home automatically snapping into place as you leave your home. House doors will lock, home appliances will switch to energy saving mode and your house will even be able to sense when you’re on your way back home (using geofencing technology).

But do we really need such a connected home? In order for the smart home revolution to really take off we need to see how it could transform our lives and whether or not it will be worth it. So in the end it’s all up to you if you want your home to be smart or not!
