In South Africa iPhones are less likely to get stolen than any other smartphone!
There’s nothing worse
than waking up after a heavy night out and realizing that your beloved
smartphone is missing… You've checked everywhere: in your bag, under the driver’s
seat in the car, in-between the couch cushions and even in the fridge! But,
sadly it is gone.
You’d be surprised
that if you have an iPhone, you are less likely to have your smartphone stolen,
but smartphones are still getting stolen left, right and centre. According to
Vodacom 60% of all their insurance claims are from theft and loss, 35% are from
physical damage and 5% are from liquid damage.
Do you want to find
out which smartphones are most at risk of theft, loss and damage? Here’s the
list that Vodacom made public:
1. Vodafone / Vodacom branded devices
2. Huawei
3. Blackberry
4. Samsung
5. LG
6. Ericsson
7. Nokia
8. HTC
9. Apple

It’s quite shocking
that iPhones are the least stolen smartphone in South Africa, I mean aren't they
the most expensive? It could be because of the high costs of fixing damages…
Just last weekend, a
friend of mine lost his smartphone at a night club in Cape Town (it was an
iPhone). The thief who picked it up and kept it for himself probably regretted
it later when he discovered that it already had a horribly cracked screen and
the charging point was completely unusable – the cost to fix it was apparently ±
R2, 000. So, I hope he can afford to fix the damage costs!
There are some simple
steps you can take to protect your smartphone from being stolen; most of it is
just common sense…
- Don’t leave your
phone unattended
- Don’t get distracted
- Be aware of crowds
- Make your phone hard to get to, even for you
- Keep your phone in a safe place
- Always have a firm grip on your phone
- Set up a PIN
- Download a tracking app
- Use common sense!

The Apple iPhone may
be the least stolen smartphone in South Africa, but you should be vigilant and
aware at all times, no matter what smartphone you own.
