Find the computer mouse that is best suited for your needs
Not so long ago,
finding and choosing a computer mouse was really easy. Usually your computer
came with one, so that was the one you stuck with. However, these days there
are many different simple and complex devices to choose from, making it possible
for you to choose the one that is best suited for your needs.
BUTTONS
Remember when extra
buttons on a computer mouse were considered to only be for gamers? Now, more
and more people are using them for practical purposes. Keep in mind that unless
you are a hardcore gamer, the number of buttons should not be your main focus,
but they can be the thing that makes the difference between two possible
models.
BRANDS
There are countless
brands to choose from when you are looking for a mouse. The brand that works
best with your needs, depends on what your needs are. For example; Logitech,
Razer and Cyborg are the best in terms of a gaming mouse while Microsoft,
Apple, Dell and HP mainly stick to designing mouse devices that are for work
and casual use.
SENSITIVITY
Another feature you
need to keep in mind is the sensitivity of the mouse. DPI stands for Dots Per
Inch, which is how sensitivity levels are measured in your mouse, the higher it
is the higher the sensitivity will be. High DPIs will often be around 1200 if
not more, this is often the kind of level gamers will go for, but it is also
important for people who do graphic and CAD design. Fortunately many mouse
devices give you the option of modifying your DPI to suit your needs. A lot of
the time, all you need to do is open up Control Panel and alter it as you like,
however some actually have specific buttons to do so.
MOUSE GRIP
Consider how you hold
your mouse. There are actually three different positions people use the grip
the mouse, and they all come with their advantages and disadvantages:
Fingertip Grip – This one is self-explanatory in you are
really only touching the mouse with the tips of your fingers. This grip allows
you the best range of motion as you can move the mouse simply be extending and
retracting your fingers.
Claw Grip – This one is similar to the fingertip grip,
except for the fact that your palm is touching the mouse at all times. Your ring
finger and pinkie will most likely wrap around the sides of the mouse, this
grip won’t offer you the same mobility as the fingertip grip, but you will definitely
have more control.
Palm Grip – This grip is when your entire hand is making
contact with the mouse. Your fingertips may not be touching it though because
extending your fingers out means that they might be slightly off the mouse of
facing forward. Palm grip lets you move your mouse at higher speeds and doesn’t
wear out your hand.
NORMAL vs TRAVEL SIZE
The difference between
these two mouse devices is quite obvious.
For those who want to use their mouse at home or at the office, a normal
mouse should do the trick. However, if you are often on the go and travelling,
a traveler model is definitely an easier option. Most of them are Bluetooth-capable
or have a nifty USB cable that retracts
in and out.
SHAPE
Aside from the basic
mouse shapes, there are five other versions worth knowing about:
Arc – The arc mouse gets its name from the extreme
arch it has. You’ll have a difficult time using it with anything but palm grip;
however it is more ergonomic and gives your fingers a rest.
Vertical – This model flips the traditional mouse on
its side. Imagine you’re shaking hands with someone, this is the position you’ll
be holding the mouse.
Flat – This one is quite deceptive, when turned off
it is flat, but when you turn it on it gets an arc.
Handshoe – This is said to be the most ergonomic mouse
available. It needs to be used with a full-on palm grip, with your thumb on one
side and your fingers on the other. This design fully supports your entire hand.
There are many options
to choose from when you are buying a mouse, the main thing you have to think
about is how you’re going to be using it. Take your time, consider your needs
and find the perfect mouse for yourself.
