How hackers use WiFi against you

WiFi is so convenient, but actually quite dangerous. There are many ways you could be giving away your identity through a WiFi connection without even knowing it, let’s take a look at what you should do instead…

Using Free Hotspots
Free WiFi hotspots seem to be everywhere and the numbers are only getting higher. However, many of them are untrustworthy and are created just so your login credentials can be picked up by hackers, using software called “sniffers”. The best defense is to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network), which will keep your private data protected.

Banking Online
You might think that no one needs to be warned about banking online when using free WiFi, but more than 100 banks across the world have lost millions from cyberhacking, so it seems a lot of people are doing it. If you want to use free WiFi in a restaurant or coffee shop, confirm the exact network name, because it is so easy for someone else in the shop to setup a fake open connection.

Keeping WiFi on all the Time
When your phone’s WiFi is automatically enabled, you can connect to an unsecure network without even knowing it. Use the location-based WiFi feature if it’s available and it will turn off your WiFi when you’re away from your saved networks.

Not using a Firewall
A firewall is your first line of defense against hackers and intruders. It’s meant to let good traffic through your computer on a network and keep the bad stuff like malware out! You should turn it off only when your antivirus software has its own firewall.

Browsing Unencrypted Websites
55% of the web’s top million sites don’t actually offer encryption and an unencrypted website allows all the data transmissions to be viewed by the prying eyes of cyber hackers. Your browser will indicate when a site is secure, but even a secure website can’t protect you from everything.

Not Updating Security Software
If you want to ensure that your own network is well protected, upgrade the firmware of your router. All you have to do is go to your router’s administration page to check. Normally, you can download the newest firmware right from the manufacturer’s website.

Not securing your Home WiFi
It is so important to set up a password that is not too easy to guess, and change your connections default name.

You enjoy free WiFi at all the hotspots and it may seem harmless, but little do you know that a stranger could be using the WiFi against you. Always take the necessary precautions!
