Technologies that simply refuse to die
There are some technologies
that refuse to give up, even though they have died long ago. Take a look at
these technologies that should be dead, but just won’t quit…
WINDOWS XP
Sometimes it is really hard to say goodbye to a beloved operating system.
Windows XP actually still has 12% of all online users actually using it,
despite many of its flaws. Even large companies are having a hard time letting
this dusty old operating system go.
FAX
Yes, you can scan documents, use a digital signature and send via email. But often,
if you need to send any documents that require legal signatures, you’ll have to
fire up the fax machine. Luckily most all-in-one printers still include the
technology to send documents over the phone line.
USB 2.0
We have USB 3.0 and 3.1, yet USB 2.0 is STILL showing up in laptops and other
devices. It’s amazing how this aging USB standard, which first appeared in
1997, still manages to find its way into new devices even though it is so much
slower than USB 3.0.
BLACKBERRY
The world has moved on from this once-dominant handset. Even Blackberry itself
may finally give up on its famous smartphone. Recently Blackberry introduced
its first Android phone, and if the company can earn a profit, the walking dead
may finally be laid to rest!
VOICEMAIL
People barely want to talk on the phone anymore, let alone deal with a bunch of
annoying and unnecessary voice messages. Sending an SMS, email or WhatsApp
message can generally accomplish the same thing with less hassle.
OPTICAL DRIVES IN
LAPTOPS
Blu-ray discs and DVDs might still work in home entertainment systems and the
old PC tower, but slapping one into your laptop just doesn’t make sense
anymore. Movies can be downloaded onto your hard drive and a lot of installing
software doesn’t even require a disc anymore. Plus an optical drive adds
unnecessary weight.
These technological
zombies have gone far beyond their end-of-life, but they insist on moving
forward into the future. From operating systems that won’t go away to smart
phones that simply shouldn’t exist anymore. It’s sad, really.
What out-of-date
technology do you think should just die out?
