Interested in the new Apple TV? It has one horrible feature…
The new Apple TV is an
incredible device; in fact it could be the best streaming box on the market!
Apps are the new channels these days, and Siri on the Apple TV is awesome.
Siri is known for
being one of the best features of the Apple TV, and it is. When the voice
search works this well, across many different services, it can really be a game
changer.
It is a good thing
that the voice search works so well, because one of the few flaws it has is the
manual search. It’s bad!
The manual search
needs to be done via text entry, and rather than using the typical grid system
that we all know, there is just a single line of text you have to scroll across
with the touchpad-enabled remote.
If you want to change
from uppercase to lowercase, you’ll need to go all the way to a row at the
bottom and then up again. The process is tedious, and it takes much longer than
it should, plus it is similar to the system they used in the 90s. Why would
they choose this manual search for such an amazing device?
The good news is that,
most of the time, you won’t have to use the remote to search for anything, you
can simply use your voice. But when you log into an app for the first time,
having to enter your username and password is a tedious experience. You only
realise how far apart letters are in the alphabet, when you have to enter them
in multiple times in Apple’s manual search!
We encourage Apple to
make their text entry a better experience; at least put all the letters on one
row or make it easier to change cases! An even better idea would be to use Siri
to enter usernames and passwords.
As much we love how
amazing the Apple TV is, entering text this way is unacceptable!
