5 money-saving steps to take when you get a new computer

You’ve just bought a new computer, so you’re probably excited to tear open the box and get everything set up. However, there are a few boring, but important tasks that will save you disappointment and money later.

The experts at The Computer Guyz recommend you take these critical steps when you get a new computer:

 - Save your serial number

Your computer probably has a serial number on the bottom of the back and you’ll need this one day. They can often wear off over time, especially on a laptop, so while you’re unpacking your new device, write down your serial number or snap a picture of it. If it’s a Windows PC, you may also want to grab a snapshot of your Windows License in case you ever need to reinstall.

- Create a recovery drive

There may come a time when something goes horribly wrong and you need to start from scratch. Most computers don’t come with recovery drives, so order a drive which will save both time and money (saving to the cloud is also an option.)

- Check your surge protector

Depending on how often you have power surges, your surge protector can actually lose its effect after time. If there’s a amber light flashing, it’s probably a good time to go out and buy a new one. If you’d rather opt for a UPS system, Off Grid has a wide range to choose from.

- Add it to your insurance

Speaking of protection, you may want some insurance for your new device, especially if its more valuable than the average PC. Some homeowner’s or renter’s insurance will allow you to schedule a computer so you’ve got some extra protection.

- Set a reminder for your warranty

Don’t you hate it when your computer has a problem and you discover its just out of warranty? The best thing to do is to put a reminder on your calendar for a few days before your warranty expires. That way you won’t put it off until it’s too late.

Of course, these are just some of the more hardware-oriented steps you should be taking. You should also make sure you set up a good antivirus on your computer. Good luck with your new computer!
