This beach in India has free public Wi-Fi!
Those who visit Malpe beach in the southern Indian district of Karnataka will be able to surf the
internet as well as the waves thanks to the free public Wi-Fi network set up by
the Indian government.
This makes it India’s
first beach to get free public Wi-Fi. The internet service is being provided by
a state-run telecom service and supported by the Indian government.
Malpe’s golden sand
beach, which is situated in the Udupi district in southern Karnataka, attracts
a large number of tourists throughout the year. Visitors will be able to access
the Wi-Fi network whenever they like, but the free service lasts for only 30
minutes. The duration is set to be extended later.
As a part of its
Digital India Initiative, the Indian government recently announced their plans
to install 2500 Wi-Fi hotspots at 256 locations by the next fiscal year. The government
hopes that this will help take India’s internet subscriber base from 400
million to 500 million by March next year.
Google has also
partnered with Indian Railways to set up Wi-Fi services at 100 major train
stations throughout the country by the end of 2016.
Looks like we will
soon have free public Wi-Fi across the globe, at any place we visit!
