ElliQ – The Active Aging Companion

EMBARGOED ElliQ by Yves Behar and FuseprojectRobots have become a popular occurrence in the lives of the younger generation for things like smart education or simply preparing for the digital future. However, there is a new start-up that aims on the senior community.

The ElliQ robot, which was designed by Intuition Robotics, is specially made to help the elderly maintain their independence by remind them to do regular tasks like taking certain medications and do daily exercise. This “Amazon Echo” for the elderly can also recommend audio books and games, and comes with much more of a personality to keep users mentally alert.

In this day and age the older generation often feels alone because their family and friends live far away or their too busy to visit all the time. New technology could help get rid of these feelings of isolation, plus it can be made easy to use, just like ElliQ!

The ElliQ can make slight movements with its head to show emotions, as well as a voice interface. While some people think the movements are just a way to attract more attention, it is created this way to be understood better as a social companion.

Technology like this is always going to be challenging because it immediately suggests that it is an alternative to human interaction.

This doesn’t have to be the case though; a robot that can assist a user and carry out important tasks can be of great use.
