How long do we have to wait for 5G?
It looks like we’ll have to wait a handful
of years for it, but it sounds like 5G mobile broadband will be so worth the
wait! Instead of 50 to 100 Mbps connections of 4G networks, 5G could top out at
20 Gbps…
Well, a lot of people are actually still
stuck using 3G, but international standards and timelines are already being set
up for what will happen next. And it’s going to be good.
5G will be fast, and I mean really fast,
fast enough to download an ultra-high HD movie on a mobile device in just 10
seconds! The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) says that 5G will get
us a minimum of 20Gbps, or 2500MB downloaded every second. It’ll make streaming
4K movies ridiculously easy to download.
The
official term won’t be 5G, but the next generation of mobile internet will be
called IMT-2020, a name settled on by ITU. It sounds pretty official, but 99%
of us will probably just stick with the must catchier and easier 5G.
The ITU recently defined its road map to
implement 5G networks, but still has to do ranging from testing the technology
to defining performance requirements and standards before a commercial
implementation in 2020.
Even so, people will likely get a glimpse
of 5G network technology sooner than you think; one of the places likely to get
on board with 5G earliest is South Korea, which plans to have it ready for the
2018 Winter Olympics. Hopefully the rest of the world won’t be too many years
behind.
The standards for 5G are being set, and
plans are afoot to have networks up and running by 2020 - ready for even faster
mobile internet?
