The worst tech predictions of all time
As we all know telling
the future is basically impossible, but some people’s predictions have been so
horribly wrong that they should be remembered for ever. These silly predictions
are from some of the biggest names, but they can still be called the worst tech
predictions of all time!
1. “No
one will need more than 637KB of memory for a personal computer. 640KB ought to
be enough for anybody.” – Bill Gates
It seems like Bill
Gates forgot to adjust for the inflation that would happen after 1981, when he
made this ridiculous quote.
2. “I predict the internet in 1996 will
catastrophically collapse.” – Robert Metcalfe
Robert told InfoWorld
in 1995 that the internet will soon spectacularly supernova, but its 20 years
later and the internet is still very much alive.
3. “Two years from now spam will be solved.” –
Bill Gates
Oh Bill, you are just
great at making predictions, aren’t you? Well, it’s been 10 years since he made
this proclamation and I’m still getting spam from foreigners who can’t spell.
4. “Everyone’s always asking me when Apple will
come out with a cell phone. My answer is, probably never.” – David Pogue
In 2006 David probably
had no idea that this was an incredibly bad prediction!
5. “Cellular phones will absolutely not replace
local wire systems.” – Marty Cooper
Marty, who was an inventor,
said this in 1981. Little did he know how ironic it is that almost everyone on
the planet now has a cellphone.
It’s a fact that even
the smartest people on the planet can say some pretty dumb things, and tech
history is full of quotes that their authors would like to take back.
