Disturbing things you’ll find in the shadows of the internet
In the 1970’s the
darknet simply meant the networks that were isolated from the mainstream
ARPANET for security reasons. But as time went by, the word came to mean areas
that were connected to the internet, although difficult to find.
The darknet consists of
mostly unsettling content and activities, and you can find pretty much anything
in the shadows. The question is, what are you going to find once you dip into
the waters of the darknet…
§ DRUGS §
It’s obvious; people
are going to use the darknet to find drugs. The darknet has revolutionized drug
sales in the same way the internet has done for legal retail stores. Before
sites like Silk Road, drug users would have to risk going to a bad area of
town, getting robbed or being caught by the police. Now, if you feel like
buying yourself a big bag of narcotics, all you have to do is sit at home and
order online!
§ DRUG DEALER RATINGS §
This one isn’t so
obvious, but if you think about it, one of the main things to do on the
internet is for users to rate retailers and make them easy to find for
everyone. This is also true on the darknet! Before Silk Road was closed down,
The Hub was a centralized location for people to rate darknet drug sellers.
§ WEAPONS §
Firearms flow freely
on the darknet. In addition to weapons that are illegal to sell online, you can
also apparently buy weapons that are illegal anywhere, like a pen gun that
looks like something out of a James Bond movie, or a chunk of uranium.
§ IDENTIFY DOCUMENTS §
Many darknet vendors
offer anything from fake drivers’ licenses to fake ID’s and passports. You may
think that the things on sale on the darknet are pretty much what a high school
student would just use to buy beer, but the plans customers have for these
items are much more criminal.
§ YOU §
Identity sales on the
darknet go way beyond cards and medical data, they travel all the way to entire
digital lives, with everything from social media and email accounts. There is
truly a wealth of personal data for sale, and you probably wouldn’t even know
your identity was being sold online.
§ HIT MEN §
Before you start
thinking that the darknet is a place where you can buy just about any service;
the people that offer murder for hire are almost always scam artist that will
take your money and never actually kill anyone. An assassination marketplace
that is trying to crowd fund the murders of important figures, also seems to be
a way to fool people out of their money.
§ BETRAYAL §
You shouldn’t be
surprised that people on the darknet are not very trustworthy. There has been a
rise in a darknet betrayal called the “exit scam”. In this scenario, a dealer
will build up a customer trust, and then leave the game and stop buying from
his suppliers; however he will keep taking money from his customers. So, the
dealer will collect a pretty penny and then simply vanish.
You can find pretty much
anything that’s considered illegal on the darknet, it is unsettling to catch a
glimpse of what lies in the shadows of the internet.
