The coolest women in tech

It’s not only about men in the tech industry, in fact, a lot of ladies are making a huge impact in tech! Here are just a few of our favourite females…

Julia Hartz
Julia founded Eventbrite, the largest platform for ticketing and event management in 2006. Yes, you can easily buy tickets to see The Foo Fighters, but Eventbrite offers you hard to come by access to start up parties and tech conferences. An added bonus is that Julia gives her employees free food and stipends for fitness, plus she hosts weekly get togethers where they can ask her anything!

Danae Ringelmann
Danae was working with finance and keeping tabs on entertainment companies like Pixar and Lionsgate. She noticed that independent artists, filmmakers, inventors and producers had a really hard time finding investors to fund their ideas. Through Indiegogo, the crowdfunding site she made fundraising tools available to all artist and entrepreneurs.

Grace Woo
Grace noticed that QR codes were “visually obtrusive” and not very useful, because of all the steps. So she decided to develop a technology called Video Response Codes, which can turn any screen into an online interactive experience! Think of pointing your phone at someone else’s phone and being able to exchange contact details with each other, Grace has made this possible, even if the device you are using is not online.

Genevieve Bell
At Intel, Genevieve leads 100 researchers who study how real people are using technology, and try to predict what they may want next. She says “we do this in order to reinvent the way we experience computing.” Tech companies really need people like Genevieve, the real power lies with the consumers and she is someone who can explain what buyers want.

Padmasree Warrior
Padmasree climbed the ranks at Motorola and made the leap to Cisco several years ago. Her job is to identify companies the tech giant should acquire and technologies it should invest in. Padmasree is far different to all the typical tech stereotypes out there; she is not geeky and doesn’t work insane hours! She still takes the time to have an interest in other things like fashion, meditation, cooking and writing poetry.

Sarah Friar
Sarah is revamping the way we do business by allowing anyone to turn their smartphone into a credit-card reader! She works at Square, where she is not only empowering small merchants, but she also runs an annual Code Camp, which teaches basic programming skills to young women.

Jennifer Pahlka
Jennifer along with Code for America bridges the gap between politics and tech. They pair skilled technical fellows with cities that can use their help, it’s like volunteer work, but these people have amazing digital skills. Jennifer even ran a federal version of this for the White House and helped the government think like a tech company!

Kara Swisher
Kara joined forces with Walt Mossberg to create a popular conference and tech blog called All Things D. After the success of All Things D, they launched Re/code, a tech news site with funding from NBC Universal. It really is a must-read for tech insiders and interested outsiders!

Caterina Fake
A neighbour of Caterina taught her basic coding skills, and she landed up at a Web-design firm. She went on to cofound Flickr and the social search engine Hunch. These days Caterina is the chairman of the board of Etsy and hard at work on a start-up called Findery, which lets people leave each other digital notes tagged ton specific analog locations.

What does tech power really look like? Yes, many of these cool women have authority and a lot of money, but they all share one quality: guts to launch new ideas and companies!
