How Five Prison Inmates Connected to the Internet!
It’s bad enough being in prison, but can you
imagine not having access to the internet on top of that?
Two prisoners from Ohio couldn’t live in a
world without the internet, so they decided to take matters into their own
hands. The jailbirds managed to build their own PCs from parts from e-waste,
hid them inside the ceiling and then later connected them to the internet using
the prison’s network!
A report has been published describing the
investigation into the incident. Apparently, a work program inside the prison went
horribly wrong when the two inmates started smuggling PC parts from the e-waste
recycling workshop and built two computers out of them.
The inmates managed to hide the computers
behind a board in the ceiling of the room and then connected their homemade PCs
to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction network to gain access
to the internet.
It is not a surprise that once the inmates
managed to get online, they broke the law yet again!
The two prisoners gained access to the
records of other inmates, changed restricted area passes, read up about
manufacturing drugs, weapons and explosives as well as applied for a credit card
under another prisoner’s name.
A prison tech employee managed to foil the
scheme when he discovered there were some strange amounts of internet activity
coming from the contractors account when they were not even meant to be
working.
A total of five prisoners were found to be
involved in this secret PC scheme, they have now all been separated and sent to
other correctional facilities.
