10 tech terms you probably don't understand

Do you ever find yourself completely confused at work meetings when the tech team throws around terms like UI and UX or HTML and CSS? It’s about time we all learn some of today’s most important tech vocabulary, here’s your chance to impressive the techies and get in on the conversation.

The internet vs. The web
You may not have realized this, but yes there is a difference between the two! The internet is actually millions of computers INTERconnected in a global NETwork (INTERNET). The web on the other hand is the system where some of the data is kept in the form of special documents, so basically the internet = equipment and connections and the web = information.

HTML vs. CSS
These two refer a bit more to how websites are made, HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the language used to write web pages and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) tells the web browsers  how to format and style an HTML document, in simplier terms HTML = holds the content in place and CSS = makes it look pretty.

Front end vs. Back end
Let’s take a look at how websites work, the front end of the website is the part that you can see (HTML and CSS) and the back end is the part of the website that makes it all work.

App vs. Software
You've probably heard the term “application” before, it simply means a set of instructions that you can use to do certain things on your iPhone or Android. Software is a general term and it means instructions for your computer, tablet or phone. There are different software such as drivers, operating systems and utilities that run your computer and make it possible for you to use all your favourite apps.

UX vs. UI
Even professionals sometimes get mixed up with these two UI (User Interface) is how a product or website is laid out and how you interact with it, UX (User experience) is how you feel about using a product or website.

Now that you’re crystal clear on some of the most popular techie talk, go and prove to yourself and your co-workers that you know what’s what in the tech world.
