Tips for longer laptop battery life

You’re in a meeting, on the road or going to class and suddenly you realise your laptop battery is nearly dead, we've all been in this situation before. For whatever reason the battery is almost empty and you still have stuff to get done, but don’t lose all hope these are some techniques you can use to lengthen your battery life at that very moment and some long-term strategies.

Activate battery saver or eco mode
This certain profile will adjust your laptops settings and shift certain things into low power to help your remaining battery juice last longer.

Disable unused devices and ports
The easiest way to save battery power is to simply turn stuff off, start by disconnecting anything you don’t need like a USB or external drive and the biggest power hogs; WiFi, Bluetooth radios etc.

Adjust settings
You can easily adjust the settings for your keyboard and screen, turn the back light for your keyboard off completely (unless you’re in the dark) then turn down the brightness and resolution for your screen

Turn off apps and processes
A lot of apps and processes running of your system also chews your battery, not just the hardware, turn off anything that isn't being used.

Simplify
Simplifying your own activities is another way to save your battery life, it’s okay to open a lot of programs at once with full power, but when its running low, make sure to stick to one program at a time.

Care and feeding of batteries
You have to take care of the battery itself, make sure not to damage it and you should occasionally take the time to let your battery drain completely before recharging it again. Another thing to remember is to always keep your battery cool and dust free, these things can shorten the life of your battery a lot.

Tune-up
Always keep your laptop tuned up for efficient power use, not only will simple maintenance tasks help your battery last longer, but they’ll also make your system faster overall.

Upgrade components
Ditch your hard drive entirely and upgrade to SSD (solid-state drive), it will improve your battery life because it uses flash memory instead of moving parts and it’ll make your system faster at the same time.

Battery backup
Finally the easiest way to ensure you always have enough battery life is to bring along an extra, the simplest option for laptops is a second battery, just swap the old one for the new one when you’re out of battery life and you’re sorted.

These simple tweaks will turn your system into a lean, mean battery saving machine, making your life so much easier and more convenient especially when you need your laptop the most.
