In-memory computing – what’s it all about?
Do you know what in-memory computing (IMC) is? Or otherwise
known as in-memory database (IMDB), main-memory database or in-memory
processing? There’s been a lot of chatter about IMC, so here’s a simple,
understandable explanation of what it is.
The basic definition of what IMC is: using a type of
middleware software that allows you to store data in RAM (Random Access Memory)
across a bunch of computers at the same time, this differs from you using normal
database management systems that use disk storage systems to store your data.
IMC requires less horsepower, CPU (Core Processing Unit) instructions,
processing and time which means it’s really, really fast!
What can IMC do for you though? It has become a cheaper,
more practical approach to speeding up data processing. These days, this helps businesses and
companies significantly, especially in the IT community. IMC has an impressive
list of advantages, which include:
- Less hardware
- Lower costs
- Simpler data processing
- Amazingly fast response times
- Immediate access to information
- Improves website performance
- Shortens transaction processing
- Queries your data only once
- Less of a burden on storage devices
- Makes the size of in-memory data smaller
- Provides a way for organizations to support business requirements

In-memory computing can make a huge difference, it is not
just 2-3x times faster, it is more than 100x times faster, even faster than the
most expensive flash-based storage available today! This information is what
makes IMC such a hot topic these days; it can process data with extraordinary
performance, making it obvious why it is so compelling to businesses.
As we've seen lately the internet is expanding, it’s not
just connecting people now-a-days its connecting things too (thermostats, light
bulbs, jet engines, heart-rate monitors), these things are producing information
that will help us, make us healthier and protect us. The technology to support
this transformation exists today, it’s faster, cheaper and a lot less trouble
and it’s called in-memory computing.
